Managing Attention in User Interfaces

Most of the time we waste with computers, aside from playing games and watching movies, is wasted because we don't manage effectively our attentional resources. I am convinced that we have to make extra efforts in configuring our computer in such a way so that it doesn't distract us, doesn't call attention to things that can wait until the time is appropriate for us to act on it.

Things that make you go hum...

I am continuously amazed at the little things that some software can totally screwup. Today's case in point is MS Word. The auto complete date seems to be using a date from the time you opened Word and not the current time.

Get rid of TV Channel Numbers

Time to rant about technology again. Do we really need the numbers in the TV channel listings?

Your phone number must be in the format (540) xxx-xxxx

Well, isn't that the best sign of the times? The software is telling that my phone number has an area code, and 7 other digits. That is news to me. I did not know that. Wow, I am amazed that I was able to function in life without this incredible tidbit of knowledge.
